If you have previously accrued pension benefits with another pension fund, you can take these benefits with you to StiPP. You can do the opposite too of course: if you leave StiPP, you can take your pension benefits with you to your new pension fund. This is known as the transfer of accrued benefits. You can read more about this here.

Transfer of accrued benefits: your pension benefits go with you
|
Automatic transfer of accrued benefits If you are leaving StiPP and if you have accrued pension benefits of between €2 and €613.52 (2025) gross per year, StiPP can transfer them to your new pension fund. You can also do the opposite: if you are new to StiPP, your previous pension fund can transfer your accrued pension benefits to StiPP.
Pension benefits of less than €2 gross per year will lapse. This is laid down by law.
We arrange it all for you StiPP checks the pensions register to see if you have been accruing pension benefits with another pension fund. Both StiPP and your new pension provider will automatically inform you when we have transferred your pension benefits. You do not have to do anything. |
|
Individual transfer of accrued benefits If you have accrued more than €613.52 (2025) gross per year in pension benefits, you can decide whether you want to transfer your pension benefits, to StiPP or some other pension fund. This is known as individual transfer of accrued benefits. |

Is the transfer of accrued benefits a good idea? It is not always easy to say whether the transfer of accrued benefits is a good idea. This is because not all pension schemes are the same. Your pension benefits at one pension fund are converted to pension benefits at the other pension fund. Your pension may therefore end up higher or lower. So compare your old pension scheme carefully with the new pension scheme before deciding to transfer accrued benefits! Comparing pension schemes is easy with the Pension Comparison Tool: Pension comparison Tool Basic Plan Pension comparison tool Plus Plan |
|
Commutate pension If your pension is less than €613.52 (2025) gross per year, StiPP will transfer it to your new employer automatically. If we have failed to make this transfer of accrued benefits within five years or you are going to reach state pension age within five years, you will receive a pension commutation offer from us.
This means you can choose to have your pension paid early as a lump sum. You will not then receive any monthly pension benefit from StiPP when you subsequently retire. We will only commutate your pension with your agreement. Please note: Commutation is only possible if your pension is less than €613.52 (2025) gross per year and if you are going to reach state pension age within five years. Emigration for example is not a reason for commutation. |
